Having spent time in ND your story made me smile, Jennifer. "Freezing and warm with delight..." What a beautiful thought, and great story—thank you so much!

Leslie, as you know we have snow and cold in ND. I also have a 3 1/2 year old granddaughter who seems to reignite when she plays outdoors. A few weeks ago, in bitter cold, she and I went for a walk with her intending that we would go to the school playground. Well, much of it was buried in snow drifts but there were huge snow hills created from the snow being pushed to clear driveways and parking lots. While she told me she could not make it to the top (they were high)she learned to make steps and did make it to the top, at which point she raised her arms in the air declaring herself the queen of the snow hill. I was freezing and warm with delight, all in the same moment! We can "stop and smell the roses" anytime of year, be they snow angels, roses or snow hills!

One neat aspect of winter is in remembering the fun we had playing in the snow as kids, and taking the time to share that kind of fun with the young ones in our lives. It's a nice way to treat our inner child and far better than grousing about the weather! Thanks, Lynn!

I wrote a blog entry last week about playing in the snow with a beloved 5 yr old. I had to drop something off at their house. I did not "need" to stay, in fact I was obsessed about a number of deadlines.

However, I don't see the child often and I wanted time with her. She warms up slowly when it's been too long between visits. I mentioned to her that the snow looked to me earlier that day, the kind for making snowmen.

Even though it was twilight, a few minutes later she begged to make a snowman. Even though I did not have my warmest clothes on, I said yes.

When we got outside, the temps were too low for the snow to stick, but we played just the same. Here is the blog I wrote (including kid pics) after we played that night:

(Two days later, their dog died. I was so glad I went inside and talked to him lovingly that day.)

Funny, I never liked snow angels even as a kid. They are hard to do artfully (they are about the moment of being on one's back but I'm an artist). They are very hard to stand up after making, as you note, without ruining the look.

But I love snowmen. Hubby Brian and I made one a few years ago (Brian made the face/hair, for the record):

I'm with you, Jane! The fun part, after making my snow angel in our back yard was remembering that you somehow have to get up afterward. That made me laugh (and maybe grunt a bit, too), on my way up!

Joanne, that's a powerful story you've told, and what a valuable reminder for all of us. Perhaps it's human nature that we hold onto those "wish I'd done ____ differently" moments, I certainly have more than my share. But why should we expunge them from our memory? As you say, that's where the lessons are; after reflecting, we walk away wiser (and maybe sometimes more enriched) for having had that experience.

When my daughter, Kaitlyn, was about 7 or 8, I went to pick her up from school during a downpour. It was truly raining cats and dogs! Upon pulling up to the school, there stood my daughter soaked to the bone from dancing in the rain. Rather than embrace the glee of a young girl, I was exasperated because she was going to get the seats wet on my recently purchased car and I had nothing to dry her off with. To this day I deeply regret my reaction and wish I could take it back. I was in the throes of a divorce back then and under tremendous stress, but how I wish I had responded to her as Lorraine did making snow angels with her grandson. Yet, I garnered many great lessons from the experience that I still carry with me 10 years later. The lessons will, in fact, be with me for a lifetime. Embrace the moments!

Harley, thank you for your story, too. Our snowmen and snow angels will disappear but our experiences will last as long as we do.

Beautiful story. Yesterday I went outside and build a snowman with my two-year old great niece who my wife and I have been raising since she was 2 weeks old. Of, course the snowman fell down a couple hours later. But we had fun. Keep making snow angels.
